The vicar said, \u201cIf you want to make peace with your conscience, take a bag of goose feathers and drop one on the porch of each one you have slandered.\u201d When she had done so, she came back to the vicar and said, \u201cIs that all?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d said the wise old minister, \u201cyou must go now and gather up every feather and bring them all back to me.\u201d After a long time the woman returned without a single feather. \u201cThe wind has blown them all away,\u201d she said. \u201cMy good woman,\u201d said the vicar, \u201cso it is with gossip.
