When at this season of the year we wish our friends a\u201cMerry Christmas,\u201dit is essential to realize that true merriment of heart is contingent upon the recognition of the truth that Christ was born in Bethlehem for our salvation.The word\u201cmerry\u201dis from an old Anglo-Saxon word which sometimes meant\u201cfamous,\u201d\u201cillustrious,\u201d\u201cgreat,\u201dor\u201cmighty.\u201dOriginally,to be merry did not imply to be merely mirthful,but strong and gallant.It was in this sense that gallant soldiers were called\u201cmerry men.\u201dFavorable weather was called\u201cmerry weather.\u201dBrisk winds were called a\u201cmerry gale.\u201dSpenser speaks of London as\u201cmerry London.\u201dThe word\u201cmerry\u201dcarries with it the double thought of\u201cmight\u201dand\u201cmirth,\u201dand is used both ways in Scripture.One of the early Christmas carols was\u201cGod Rest You Merry,Gentlemen.\u201dThe Christian is to engage in spiritual merriment as he thinks upon the fact that,through the redemption,he becomes a child of God\u2019s family.The Bible teaches that the angels made merry at Christ\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n
