You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.<\/p>\n

DEUTERONOMY 5:11<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

God\u2019s name is too often tossed about like a dirty rag in a garage. If we slam our thumb in the door or if we get some frustrating news, we launch his name into the air like a ballistic missile fueled by our irritation. If someone cuts us off in traffic, we grab the Lord\u2019s name and throw it back in reaction. Or if we get a juicy morsel of gossip or some unexpected news, we erupt in a barrage of flippant repetitions of his name. And, sadly, we use various mutations of the name of Jesus\u2014frequently laced with the vulgar power of profanity.<\/p>\n

This needs to stop. We wouldn\u2019t want our own name discarded in the mud, cast carelessly about, and coupled with cursing. How can we dare do that with God\u2019s name then? Importantly, out of the Ten Commandments, God placed the honor of his name as number three. We must not misuse God\u2019s name, but rather seek to honor it in all that we do.<\/p>\n
