THE VOICE OF AUTHORITY<\/p>\n

And when Jesus had finished these parables,he went away from there,and coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue,so that they were astonished,and said,\u201cWhere did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?Is not this the carpenter\u2019s son?Is not his mother called May?And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?And are not all his sisters with us?Where then did this man get all this?\u201dAnd they took offense at him.But Jesus said to them,\u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.\u201dAnd he did not do many mighty works there,because of their unbelief.Matthew 13:53-58 RSV<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019teaching was unique.He took God out of the theoretical realm and placed Him in the practical.He used no qualifying statements or phrases in declaring His way of life.He didn\u2019t use such phrases in declaring His way of life.He didn\u2019t use such phrases as\u201cI venture to say\u201dor\u201cPerhaps it\u2019s this way\u201dor\u201cIt is my considered opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

He spoke with authority!He spoke with finality!He spoke as though He knew\u2026and He did!When the Sermon on the Mount was completed we read that\u201cthe people were astonished at this doctrine:for he taught them as one having authority,and not as the scribes\u201d(Matthew 7:28-29).<\/p>\n

His was not the soft,empty conjecture of the philosopher who professes to search for truth but readily admits he has never found it.It was more the confident voice of the mathematician who gives his answers unhesitatingly because the proof of the answer can be found within the problem.Am I listening to Him-or am I cynic as were so many of His countrymen?<\/p>\n
