February 23 – Pocket Protectors

“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

MAT T H EW 6 : 2 1

People can be a lot like pocket protectors. They can be tight-fisted, tight-minded tightwads. Even if they were to see another person in need, they might seize the grip on their wallets, their time, their appearance, their performance, and their stuff. They can desperately keep for themselves

whatever precious item they have treasured in their pockets. To let their guard down would be to relinquish control—so without thinking they might find themselves standing defensively against others who simply need the smallest helping hand.

But Jesus lives with wide-open arms. He shares his life, kingdom, mercy, and salvation. He offers himself sacrificially, generously, and even scandalously in concern. He reaches his hands out in an invitation for the poor and downcast to join him in communion. People were never meant to be stingy, stuffy, or stuck. They were created to treasure Jesus, and, as a result, to generously treasure others.

Pray for the Day:

Lord Jesus, you have asked me to be like you, radically committed to openhandedness. Lead me to an opportunity to practice generous living today. Amen.
