February 5 – Treat People Well

No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

I S A I A H 5 8 : 6

Imagine a religious dude entering the room, sweat beading down his brow, feverish “fainthood” (false + sainthood = fainthood) in his eyes, declaring dramatically in a dry, raspy voice, “Oh, I am so burdened because I am fasting for the Lord.”

Well, isn’t that special. God goes to great lengths in the Bible to make it clear that he doesn’t want people to give up food in order to look more spiritual in the eyes of others. God doesn’t think it’s awesome for people to intentionally malnourish themselves in order to get attention. He actually looks away in disgust from that kind of theater.

God created you to live altruistically in the patterns of your life. If someone is wronged, give up your own interests to pursue freedom for them. If someone is working too hard on your behalf, take their extra burden upon yourself. If someone needs something that you have in abundance,

then give it to them. The bottom line is that we are to treat people well because Jesus treated people well.

Pray for the Day:

Jesus, show me what I can give up in order to give life to someone else. Amen.
