February 27 – Skubala

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ.

P H I L I P P I A N S 3 : 8

You could say it is “dog dung,” or maybe you would rather call it “garbage,” or, if you’re British, perhaps you’d like to call it “rubbish.” And maybe you have a more profane word for it. Literally, when he wrote it in Greek, the word the apostle Paul used is σκύβαλα, or written in English it looks like skubala. It means “excrement.” Did you just read that correctly? Yep.

Paul wrote it. It’s in the Bible. Offal. Dookie. Cow pies thrown on the top of a dump. Skubala. That’s what Paul wrote.

Why did he drop the boys off at the pool like this? Well, he came to a point in his life where the things that he once held as most important he now considered skubala. All of his ambitions and work, all of his pride and achievements, all of it he says was worth a pile of poop when compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus. Compared to knowing Jesus, everything else is skubala.

Pray for the Day:

Dear Jesus, help me get my priorities straight. Amen.
