February 24 – Rot

A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.

P R O V E R B S 1 4 : 3 0

Three thousand years ago there was a chart-topping pop song that must have gotten stuck in King Saul’s mind and driven him mad. The lyrics weren’t too deep really, just regular boy-band type of stuff. But they must have irritated Saul over and over and over again. The words from 1

Samuel 18 went like this: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens thousands.” Saul didn’t like that song.

King Saul began to envy this young warrior named David. What David had (faith, fame, adoration, potential, promise, good looks, magazine covers?), Saul once had, but had lost. And so Saul thought, Well, if I can’t have it, then David can’t have it anymore either.

In fact, the Bible says that the song was “bad in the eyes of Saul.” He looked at the song, he looked at David, and he looked at himself, and his eyes made his heart malignant. Jealousy, not God, took control of the way he looked at his life, and so he “kept a jealous eye on David.”

Pray for the Day:

Lord Jesus, rid my heart of jealousy today. Let me find my peace in you alone. Amen.
